Author | Speaker | Advocate

Kristin Smedley is an award-winning non-profit leader, TEDx speaker, and author - ¬ but she never planned on any of that. Kristin did plan to be a great third grade teacher, however her personal path to greatness took an unexpected turn when two of her three children were diagnosed as blind. She had to learn the tools of blindness and build a team of experts that would help her navigate this path that she had not been trained for. Kristin’s two blind sons are now thriving as gifted high school and college students, elected student council officials, baseball championship winners, International Braille competition finalists, and social butterflies. In 2011, Kristin launched a nonprofit to fund research and resources for children living with the rare eye disease her sons have, CRB1 LCA/RP. In just eight years, the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation has raised over 1.3 million dollars and achieved a National Rare Eye Disease Awareness Day. That legislation, H.R. #625, was the first in US history to be submitted in Braille and it advocates for better resources for blind and visually impaired Americans. Kristin partnered with Spark Therapeutics to help achieve the first ever FDA approved gene therapy to treat an inherited retinal disease in the United States. She has done a TEDx Talk in New York City to change perceptions of blindness and she partnered with Comcast media to spread awareness of the inclusive X1 product. Earlier this year, Kristin published her first book called Thriving Blind: Stories of Real People Succeeding Without Sight. It achieved #1 New Release on Amazon for paperback and kindle. Kristin partnered with TMobile and the National Braille Press to make the book available in Braille. Kristin recently received one of the highest honors in the rare disease community: The Champion of Hope Award and was named a Trustee of the Association for Clinical Research Professionals

Keynote - Empathetic Leadership: 21st Century Leadership

Deans Hall

$0.00

The world is changing drastically with the Gen X, Y and Millennials making up more of the workforce, resulting in a new type of skill is needed to lead them. It's called Empathetic Leadership and women are naturally suited to master it and become more empowered to lead in the 21st Century. As a woman working in the late 1980's on Wall Street, I know all too well the masculine approach to leadership. Now, in the 21st Century, women are positioned to rise to the top and hold more power to lead than ever before, if they know they possess a super power called Empathy, and use it to with the new workforce. But they must first know how to use empathy as a way to manage and not as a weakness. In this presentation I'll present many methods for building this skill and using it to find success in everything they do. I've had bountiful results since honing my Empathetic Leadership skills at work, but also in my personal life. It's a MUST for woman who want to be empowered!

Cape Off! Conquering Superwoman Syndrome by Improving Emotional Intelligence Without Sacrificing your Sanity

Deans Hall

Society tells women to be everything to everyone all at once. Trying to balance family, relationships, and career can be challenging. 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness in a given year (Mental Health by Numbers, n.d.). Anxiety and depression are the most common reasons why people visit a therapist. Women are twice as likely to experience depression or generalized anxiety disorder than men (Mental Health Disparities, 2017). Taking on too many projects and being afraid to ask for help can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Learn how to improve your emotional intelligence and create balance in your life without sacrificing your sanity. I will provide my 10 Commandments of Emotional Intelligence. These 10 self-affirming tips of improving your emotional intelligence can be used as daily reminders to remain happy and stress-free. I will also share some of my favorite wellness hacks which have been featured in O, The Oprah Magazine, Bustle, and Livestrong.com. Objectives: 1. Attendees will learn 10 tips to improve their emotional intelligence. 2. Attendees will learn how to set healthy boundaries in both their personal and professional relationships. 3. Attendees will be more self-aware of their personal strengths. By being fully present in the moment, they are more focused, happier, and productive.

Making Culture Visible: Utilizing Technology Advancements to Engage the NextGen Workforce

Room 107

Culture is a lot more than engagement or values – it is about business goals, social impact and driving change within your leaders, teams and overall organization. Additionally, culture is not an amorphous concept - it can be seen and understood by knowing which factors to measure. Culture is especially important to understand for multi-generational workforces. Fundamentally, organisations are looking for a person who can carry out the responsibilities and tasks competently whilst millennials are looking for an organisation where they can bring their heart and aspiration to the job. However, these two opposite views can still meet in the middle, only if organizations are willing to shift their culture strategy; from one that is job focused to one that is impact focused. In this discussion, Annette White-Klososky will discuss these factors as well as how to act on gathered data to trigger major revenue increases.

Social Identity, Navigating Upstander Techniques, and Promoting Inclusive Spaces

Deans Hall

In our society, identity and personality have real effects on how others engage with us and us with them. Identities such as race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, anxiety, disability, gender, and more can affect our levels of safety in different circumstances and influence how comfortable we feel stepping up when situations arise. For these reasons, and as business owners, employees, and influencers, becoming an active and engaged bystander can be complex and feel daunting. In this workshop we will first consider some of our multiple personal and social identities through interactive and reflective activities. In addition to reflecting on our own identities, this will create a space to reflect on identities and experiences outside of our own. We will then consider the De-escalation toolkit and 5 D's of bystander intervention outlined by the Audre Lorde Project and how they can be used proactively for creating inclusive environments. The session will end using the combined knowledge developed from the workshop and personal experiences to role play examples in which we can make our own work and work places more inclusive. Participants will leave more aware of their identities and potential interactions, familiar with bystander intervention tools, and ready to begin to intentionally avoid creating or maintaining oppressive spaces.

Compassionate Leadership: The intersection of belonging and authenticity

Room 107

This session focuses on leaders cultivating a culture of compassion and empathy in the workplace by exploring how we communicate, how we listen and how we connect with each other. When we remember we are dealing with human beings that walk through the door everyday in the workplace craving connection, we can better drive engagement, happiness and a positive work environment. Diversity and inclusion is about much more than just acceptance. It's about compassion and love for humanity. Intersectionality is the cornerstone of belonging and leading authentically. The research behind how this plays out in the workplace is eye-opening and how it plays out is the difference between turn-over, call outs and productivity.

Deans Hall

$0.00

Your leadership will rise and fall with your ability to manage conflict. Workplace conflict kills culture, unless you know how to turn fights into opportunity. Unresolved conflict costs companies money in lost productivity and increased turnover. It’s breaking families and killing our culture. And it’s just not fun. Understanding the underlying causes of conflict and how to walk through conflict means more connection and growth. And one resolved conflict at a time, we can cultivate a home, a workplace, and a culture of peace.

Learn to SEE: Set Extraordinary Expectations

Room 106

I am a single Mom of three children. Nineteen years ago I found out my first baby was blind. I crashed. Hard. Fate wasn’t done with me, though. My second baby was diagnosed with the same rare blindness three years later. My life was a nightmare until my perception of blindness changed, and the journey since that day has been extraordinary. So extraordinary, in fact, that my blind sons have won baseball championships (on sighted teams), one was Valedictorian, another trained with Team USA… the list of accomplishments that nobody expected is long. But not only were my boys' lives impacted by my SEE formula, my own life was as well. I have bounced back from divorce, built an global nonprofit, and wrote a #1 New Release (Amazon) book! I started this journey completely hopeless, and I was just named the "Champion of Hope" by an international organization. If I can do it, anyone can do it... and I will them how! Participants will be ignited to look at their current challenges differently and they will leave armed with the tools they need to get going on their own extraordinary journey! My formula of perception + expectation + ignition will change the way you think, act and achieve!

Mindfulness: Your Leadership Competitive Advantage

Room 106

This presentation teaches the essential skills to leadership in the realm of emotional intelligence and mindfulness. In this workshop, we will provide you with the rationale of why mindfulness is important and how it will make you an effective leader. You will also learn very practical tools. I am extremely passionate about leadership and teaching practical and tangible tools that people can use in their everyday life, because I know what it is like to be in a work environment that can be challenging and tough to navigate people, relationships and politics. I’m thrilled to be able to teach people practical tools to help them be more effective leaders. What makes me different from many other speakers is that I teach my participants how" to connect with people in a deeper way through these tools. No one ever teaches you "how" to build deeper relationships or “how” to manage stressful emotions or challenging situations. The tools I teach are impactful and profound and you will walk out of the presentation with not only the tools, but increased self-awareness.

How to Stop Half-Assin' It: Leading from the Side

Deans Hall

Many think of a leader as someone with all the answers, a commanding presence. True leadership lies in vulnerability. In this workshop, Jasmine guides women on the importance of sharing their failures & adversity in leadership. You'll leave feeling empowered to help others by leading from the side. In my family we jokingly have a motto, "Williams lead from the front." It's a powerful saying that carries significant responsibility. But many times, we need to focus less on leading from the front and more on leading from the side. I truly believe we have an unfathomable amount of untapped talent around us, but in business we still often see mistakes as failures and not as learning experiences. As leaders, it's our job to authentically share our own failures to show that mistakes are not the end-all-be-all. Failure is just the starting point, it's what you decide to do next that is most crucial. After my presentation, women in leadership will feel confident in "How to Stop Half-Assin' It" by just leading from the front; they'll know how to authentically lead from the side.

Power UP! Financial Literacy for Independence

Room 107

The most significant strategy that I use that has had the most positive impact on my success is developing a “powerhouse mindset”. I've learned that self-sabotage is a key factor in how well we navigate life and impact the world. Small, consistent shifts can position us to achieve greatness. I am active in my community and am an Awareness Advocate for financial literacy, breast cancer, sexual assault and mental health. I am also very passionate about women’s empowerment as a member of the Baltimore City Commission for Women: Women in Leadership, Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes (SSPW), Heal A Women to Heal A Nation (HWHN), Women in Business International (WBI) and the International Women’s Association (IWA). I am also a proud member of the FDIC’s Money Smart Alliance and the Black Speakers Network (BSN).
